WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE

Have you ever had a time in your life, where you felt you were doing everything right, and your life still seemed to fall apart? Unfortunately, bad things do happen to good people. How we handle those bad events will determine the course of our destiny. We have to keep our thoughts going in the right direction. We cannot afford to allow the devil to deceive us into being mad at God because if we disconnect ourselves from the Power Source, we’re doomed. Therefore, if you’re going to stay connected to the Lord in the difficult times, you have to remember a few things:

  1. Jesus said in this world you will have tribulation. Doing the right thing does not exempt you from trials. In Matthew 14:22-24, the disciples found that out when Jesus told them to get in the boat and go across the lake, and they ended up encountering a storm. They did what they were told and still entered rough waters, and so will we. However, Jesus says in John 16:33, although we will experience tribulation, “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
  2. No weapon formed against you will prosper. God says the weapons the devil uses against you won’t prosper. He never said they wouldn’t form. So why is it that we get bent out of shape when hit a proverbial snag, and the devil hits us with his best shot? God said it won’t work! Therefore, you must ask the Father for His instructions, follow them, and then “stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.”
  3. God uses adversity to get glory for Himself. One of the reasons we have to go through adversity is so that God can make Himself visible and tangible to us. How else are we going to “see” Him or know that He exists unless He manifests himself through supernatural acts? God wants to get glory for Himself. Why? Not because He is an egomaniac, but because He needs to be seen in this earth so that people know that He exists. Only then will they come to Him for the salvation and help they so desperately need.

Therefore, when adversity strikes, you must cling to God with all your might. You must have the bulldog kind of faith that refuses to let go of God’s promises. You must be determined that no matter what happens, who lives, who dies, who gets healed or doesn’t get healed, whether the money comes or not, you will serve Lord.  As Peter said in John 6:68 when Jesus asked the disciples if they were going to abandon Him, “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Beloved, we all are going to have “situations” occur in our lives even if we are doing everything we are supposed to be doing. That’s not negative thinking. That’s just reality. Jesus has already told us this. The question is how will you handle the adversity when it comes? Will you trust in God’s love for you, expect Him to keep His Word to you, and believe Jesus has already overcome any circumstance in which you may find yourself?  Or will you get angry with God, turn your back on Him, declare He’s not real, or that He doesn’t love you? You must make up in your mind now, before adversity strikes, that you will go all the way with God no matter what. Then you can truthfully sing that old hymn, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus, which ends with the declaration, “No turning back, no turning back.”
