Jesus used the example of wildflowers to teach His disciples not to worry about provision. He said in Matthew 6:28-30, “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” Apparently, God wants us to trust Him for everything we need.
Even Flowers Need God
Do you realize that wildflowers are totally dependent on our heavenly Father? They can’t do anything but wait for Him to send them what they need to make food for themselves through the photosynthesis process that takes place in their leaves. They are anchored into the ground. They can’t go and get food. They have to stand right there and allow the Lord to produce the necessary conditions.
For example, God has to send the rain at the right time to water the soil. He has to make sure that there is an adequate amount of sunshine. Father has to put the right nutrients in the soil needed to nourish them. Finally, He has to empower them to grow a root system that will allow the water and nutrients to be taken up and used to produce food within them. They are TOTALLY dependent on God. Without God’s orchestration of the whole process, the flower will die!
God Desires the Abandonment of Self-Sufficiency
God wants you to be like a wildflower, and recognize your total dependence on Him. He wants you to stop your attempts to be self-sufficient and look to him for all that you need. If you are going through a trying time right now, perhaps God is taking you through a process that is designed to eliminate your tendency to attempt to provide for yourself. Maybe He is trying to strip you of a self-sufficient attitude. He longs to hear you to say, “God, I’m no better than a wildflower; I can’t do it myself. I NEED YOU.”
You Can Experience Freedom from Worry
Therefore, if you want peace or freedom from worry, purpose in your heart to be a “Son” flower and renounce self-sufficiency today. Declare unto God, “Lord, I am totally dependent on You for provision.” As Dr. Bill Winston stated, “God never meant for you to bear the weight of your own provision.” Thus, there is no need to keep trying to make your own way. Your job is to only do what the Holy Spirit directs you to do, then look unto the hills from whence cometh your help (Psalm 121:1), recognizing that your heavenly Father will make sure you have all that you need.
