Have you ever had a period in your life when you felt down emotionally? You may have felt as if you had lost your joy. The dark cloud of depression had engulfed you. For whatever reason you didn’t feel happy.You wondered if it would ever end and whether you’d ever be happy again. The good news is that, for believers, happiness is unnecessary. God does not even want you to seek happiness because happiness is based on what is happening in your life. Jesus said in this world ye shall have tribulation.  So perpetual happiness is an impossibility. However, perpetual joy is possible for you as a believer, but it depends on your response to what is happening in your life.

Nehemiah 8:10 says, “Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Therefore, when you experience unhappy events, God says He has provided you with something better than happiness: JOY. Joy is a part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) that already resides within you, and you must decide to tap into it. Below, I have listed the “Five A’s” that will help you to overcome depression and tap into the joy of the Lord:

  1. Apply positive thinking. “Stinkin’ thinkin’” can be a major factor in depression. Therefore, you must focus on the Word of God to dispel the lies of the enemy. Purpose in your heart that you will count your blessings. Train your mind to focus on the positive things God is doing. Gratitude for what God has done and focusing on God’s Word will go a long way in helping to alleviate depressed emotions.
  2. Address spiritual oppression. Luke 10:19 says that as believers, we have power over all the power of the enemy. Therefore, bind the forces of evil that are the source of depression and take authority over them. Isaiah 61:3 says that we should put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Praise pulverizes the enemy. When you feel down, worship will be instrumental in your being able to win the war against depression.
  3. Ask for supernatural healing of soul wounds. The Holy Spirit is the Healer. However, you must forgive those who have hurt you if healing is to take place in your heart. Obedience to the Word is the true barometer as to whether you have forgiven or not, and Luke 6:28 says that we are to love, bless, pray for, and do good to those who have caused us emotional pain. Therefore, you must forgive and let it go, follow the instructions of Jesus about how to treat your enemies, and only then will the healing begin that will lead to the end of depression.
  4. Alter brain chemistry. Pray and believe God for supernatural healing of the brain chemistry imbalance causing the depression. Rearrange your life to eliminate stressors that can cause your brain chemistry to shift in a negative way. See a doctor and get prescription meds or take natural supplements to help alleviate depression if necessary.
  5. Assist others. Use your gifts and talents to be a blessing to others. Find a way to make a positive difference in someone else’s life. God created you for a purpose, and He has given you gifts and talents to use for His glory and positively impact the body of Christ. When you help others, it will bring you joy.

If you are feeling down today, or if you become depressed in the future, use the “Five A’s” as a checklist. Ask God what action He wants you to take to get your joy back. When you do your part that He requires, then He will provide the supernatural power to help you overcome depression and restore the joy of your salvation.
